Epoxy Flooring

Epoxy coatings seal and protect concrete surfaces and can be used to provide a particular surface finish. Epoxy coatings can be roll-coats, self-levellers, chemical-resistant coatings, non-slip finishes or a combination of these properties.

Epoxy flooring can also refer to a thick mix of epoxy resin and aggregates applied by trowel or screed to create falls to waste, coving and other features.

Typically epoxies are chosen for:

  • High Durability
  • Affordability
  • Multiple Surface Finish Options (non-slip, easy to clean, etc)
  • Wide Colour Range
  • Smart, Attractive Appearance

Australasian Specialty Coatings has a long history of successful installations of epoxy surfaces. Contact us to find out more.

Polycement Flooring

Polymer-Modified Cement floor coatings, or polycements, are the ideal materials for hard wearing areas and floors with raised levels of chemical or temperature exposure.

Polycements are non-porous, and compared to epoxies have greater:

  • Chemical Resistance
  • Heat Resistance
  • Thermal Shock Resistance
  • Impact Resistance
  • Abrasion Resistance

These materials have earned their place in our portfolio through successful installations in areas such as:

  • Under 40-tonne forklift traffic in aluminium mills
  • In high-hygiene bakery rooms
  • In cosmetics and chemical manufacture
  • In wash bays
  • Under food handling equipment
  • In pubs, shops, hotels and open kitchens where appearance is just as important as function

Food Grade Flooring

Industries such as food and beverage, pharmaceuticals, meat and poultry, dairy products, breweries, wineries and many others have special requirements from their flooring.

As well as meeting your safety standards, floors in these environments must help with cleanliness and hygiene to pass HACCP requirements. Codex Alimentarius, the Food Standards Authority, and many others provide guidelines for flooring.

Australasian Specialty Coatings has considerable experience in working to meet and exceed these standards. Falls to waste, coved wall/floor boundaries, bunded areas, sealing off ‘harbourage for pests,’ and seamless floors are all available. Some of the materials we use even have microbe growth inhibitors incorporated into their properties.

Colour Coded Floor Plans

Large operations in such industries as manufacturing, logistics and processing are always looking to increase efficiency and improve safety. Many established businesses adopt systems such as ‘5S’ or set their own colour schemes for safety layouts.

The 5S system, along with other similar ideas, includes creating a distinct visual key to organise the workplace. Colours and signage on the floor denote the activities or items used there or convey important safety information.

As well as products such as our Safety Walkways, Australasian Specialty Coatings has installed many Safe Workplace and 5S layouts for some of Australia’s biggest processors and producers of food products, packaging and other goods.

Safety Flooring

Australasian Specialty Coatings has a range of surface coatings that can be customised to make the workplace safer and help to fulfil the employer’s duty of care to workers.

A wide variety of options exist for slip resistant flooring. Selecting the right surface can be critical to a successful outcome both to meet Australian Standards and to provide a genuinely safe surface that will stay non-slip.

Other features include colour coding for walkways, forklift zones, truck zones and danger areas – all incorporated into the floor materials so that the markings won’t wear away. See our Colour-Coded Floor Plans & 5S Flooring for more information.

For existing buildings our materials can be used to create or modify steps and ramps, repair damaged and uneven surfaces, remove trip hazards and eliminate or channel liquid flows.

Acid/Chemical Resistant Floors and Coatings

Many operations have areas where unusual or aggressive chemicals must be stored and handled. Oils, cleaning detergents, CIP chemicals, batteries and strong acids and alkalis used in production processes all attack and break down concrete and many corrode steel.

Australasian Specialty Coatings can select and install specialist or custom-formulated materials designed to resist chemical attack and contain dangerous chemicals.

We will consider every chemical agent to which a surface may be exposed and then assign the right materials for the task. Our customers regularly rely on our expertise to contain and isolate acids, alkalis, solvents, oils, greases, animal by-products, coolants, fuels, alcohols and other aggressive substances.

Australasian Specialty Coatings is experienced in applying Secondary Containment materials such as Novolac Epoxies, Polyaspartics, Polyurethanes and other coatings to protect bunds and chemical storage areas.

Heavy Industry Flooring

Australasian Specialty Coatings has installed flooring in the heaviest use industrial sites around Australia. Materials designed for highways, chemical plants and mine works have been adapted for applications providing floors with:

  • High Compressive Strength
  • High Wear Resistance
  • Resistance to Chemicals
  • High Friction Surfaces

Floors installed in heavy industry environments often require significant remediation work. Success depends on a thorough understanding of the environment the floor has to withstand.

Australasian Specialty Coatings’ experience in some of Australia’s toughest working environments has led to systems that allow the client to monitor degradation and wear patterns of the floor. Contact us today for a system to suit your needs.

Expansion Joints

Expansion joints – and release joints, shear joints, day joints, movement joints and others – are the least appreciated parts of any floor, but it is critical to get them right.

If neglected, expansion joints are often the first point of failure, leading to:

  • Concrete cancer
  • Homes for pests
  • Bacterial breeding grounds
  • Concrete cracking
  • Crumbling slab edges
  • Starting points for contamination
  • Trip hazards
  • Pot-holes and bumps – forklift hazards

Australasian Specialty Coatings has a wide range of expansion joint treatments for concrete floors, metal platforms, plate and machinery fittings, wall-to-floor joints as well as treatments for cracks in concrete and in other materials.

Wall-to-floor coving is an essential requirement in Food and Beverage, Pharmaceutical, Healthcare and other high hygiene environments. Coving eliminates the corners where dirt gets trapped, and prevents liquid ingress to the joint where wall and floor meet.

It also plays a critical role in waterproofing applications, moving water away from the wall materials and the joint of wall and floor.

We have installed hundreds of kilometres of coving of all sizes, shapes and materials, and can advise clients on the best system for their environment.

High Friction Surfacing

High friction surfaces are designed to prevent slips by pedestrians and to increase traction for machinery and vehicle traffic. The extra traction is usually created with an aggregate protruding from a base coat of resin, adhesive or cement.

Buses and trucks accelerate and brake on the slopes of ramps, bridges and hills dropping oil, diesel, and rubber shreds which act as lubricants. Container lifters and trucks loading cargo ships at ports must contend with steel ramps often covered in oil and greasy sea-spray.

The tight, steep ramps of parking structures are rapidly worn smooth and slippery by the high shear forces exerted on the concrete by vehicular traffic. Tow-trucks and low loaders haul heavy machinery up steel ramps.

Steel plates cover trenches under thousands of vehicles a day on motorways and roads around our cities.

Australasian Specialty Coatings uses advanced, durable resins with high shear resistance and excellent adhesion to hold the toughest of aggregates in place under the heaviest traffic imaginable.

Whatever your environment – roads, ports, mines, warehousing – a solution can be engineered to meet your needs.

Warehouse Flooring

Warehouse floors require more consideration than might at first be obvious.

Safety considerations include grip, colour coding, smoothing of bumps and damaged concrete, expansion joints, slopes, ramping and speed humps.

Operational considerations include smoothness, ease of cleaning, sealing to prevent dust, durability, and minimal shutdown times.

Every operation is different so we tailor the floor to your needs, design it with you and install it with the least possible interruption to your business processes.

Heat and Thermal Shock Resistant Flooring

Heat resistant flooring involves materials and surface preparation designed specifically for extreme temperatures or sudden changes in temperature. This can be necessary when traditional floor materials and even concrete fail under the demands of temperature and traffic.

These materials are often used for large commercial freezers, steel mills, under and around ovens, and hot wash down areas. Material selection is critical to resist the effects of long term exposure to the temperature.

Thermal shock is also important. When the temperature changes suddenly the material on the surface – usually the floor coating – will expand or contract as it rapidly heats or cools. Material further from the surface will take longer to respond to the change, expanding or contracting more slowly.

The difference in the rates of expansion or contraction puts stress on the bond between the two materials. With the wrong materials or preparation, this stress can lead to cracking or delamination.

Australasian Specialty Coatings have a long track record of installing heat resistant coatings both for floors and other surfaces. Contact us to discuss a solution to suit your environment.
